ILMU - the exchange of knowledge for knowledge. Community driven initiative and immersive offering of talks and workshops.
Did you know that the oldest archeological evidence of a house construction dates back to around 1.8 million years? Located in Olduvai Gorge, Africa, this is where scientists believe that mankind originated. To put that into perspective, Planet Earth itself is 4.5 billion years old. Modern humans have only been around for 200,000 years - yet our footprint is clearly palpable. Architecture has evolved exponentially throughout this period, with advancements in the fields of science and technology consistently contributing to good design. But what defines ‘good design’? In the last 30 years alone, our species has destroyed more than a third of the Earth’s natural resources, with buildings and construction accounting for 36% of global energy use. Good design is no longer enough. This detrimental gap between design and construction emphasises the need for more mindful design. Awareness should be practiced from the conception of a structure, to its construction, and later to its eventual demolition or re-use. Through an understanding of reusable resources, local craftsmanship, material manipulation and community based project management, this presentation and workshop look to explore our responsibility as conscious designers - and more importantly as global citizens of the same team.”
